Training to become an animal keeper
We expect the graduate of the secondary school/Junior high school level ("Realschulabschluss") with good marks in maths and biology as well as a practical term of several weeks in a zoo.

You should send a letter explaining your motivation, a CV, and a copy of your last school report. In your application you should your expectation on the job and why you want to learn it. You should also write about your practical experience. Your application should reach the zoo by February 28. We cannot send back your application due to high financial costs. Please keep in mind: very many young people want to become an animal keeper and only few get onto the short-list. Usually we can offer only one place per year.

Practical and theoretical apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts for three years. During this period, trainee learns all about the various units and all animal species in the zoo. There is also a two-week-period of school at Berlin college. After 1.5 years an intermediate exam and after 3 years the final exam takes place. This includes a theoretical test at the college at Berlin and a vocal and practical exam at the zoo of Leipzig. Then you are appointed as animal keeper by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).
