Zamek Książąt Pomorskich – The castle of the Pomeranian dukes in Szczecin
The castle of the Pomeranian dukes is one of the biggest culture centers in western Pomeranian.
Coming to the center of the town over the bridges of the Oder one recognizes the massive outstanding building of the Gothic cathedral and a light grey silhouette of the renaissance castle with the green helmets of the towers, the former seat of the dukes of the Pomeranian lineace of the griffins (Greife).
Rebuilt after war destruction, it became the seat of several offices and cultural institutions, i.a. the cultural center „Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes", intending the support of the culture and the artists in Szczecin and its surrounding district. The castle of the Pomeranian dukes is the cultural institution of the district western Pomerania.
Exhibitions and musical offers of the castle get special attention. Here chamber concerts, concerts with classic and old music, chorus concerts, among them an international chorus concert, midday concerts on Sundays, chamber concerts by candlelight, during the summer season promenade concerts take place in the small and open air concert in the big castle courtyard. Among the artists are ensembles and soloists of the whole world.
In the castle the Vocal Instrumental Ensemble Ensemble Camerata Nova is working, too. Here the theatres Krypta and Piwnica przy Krypcie are playing. Furthermore a small cinema is situated and seminars and scientific congresses take place there. In the northern wing and the southern wing exhibition galleries are located where about 30 exhibitions – among them photo and art exhibitions as well as historic expositions - are carried out every year.
